Use a long screwdriver with the blunt end in your ear and the pointy end moved 
around to different parts of the engine until you can localize the source of 
the sound.

You should not have added the paper shim. That is for earlier cars which do not 
have O-ring cranks. End play is adjusted by changing the end play shims to ones 
of different thicknesses.
