For squarebacks, this just reached up and clipped to the drip rail at the rear of the roof. It really wasn't useful, because this didn't give enough clearance to do much of anything with the engine. Fastbacks (and notches, I assume) didn't get this strap, they just have a hook near the right hinge that you can snag the right side latch loop into. As a practical matter, I always take the cover out, too. It's the only way to get enough room to work. Note also that just tilting the cover all the way back against the rear seat will usually bend the anchors for the tabs on the forward end of the cover, so I don't recommend this. This means that squareback engine covers are different from all the others, since only the squarebacks got the strap and hook. In the final year of production, however, VW even dropped the strap and hook from the squares, too, so, for that year alone, the engine covers were all alike. (Someone else can write in now and tell me I'm wrong, because maybe early squares didn't get the strap either. ;-) -- Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ------------------------------------------------------------------- List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
