I am an experienced Type 1 owner who just aquired a 73 Fastback with the D-Jetronic fuel injection. I have read through the bentley manual, haynes manual, and various websites on the D-Jetronic. I have not done a basic health check yet on the car (timing, points, plugs, compression, etc.) but have noticed that when it cold starts it does not rev up the engine (I have to put my foot on the gas). The car drives fine, but has an unsteady oscilating idle. I contacted my local VW shop regarding availability / cost of fuel injection parts before I go through the car. They informed me that most parts are no longer available and that the system is not worth trying to fix. In the shop's opinion I should get some 34ICT webers and remove the fuel injection completely. The car is completely original (down to the radio) with a straight body and I would like to keep the D-Jetronic system. If, however, I am going to constantly fight with tune-ups and parts aquisition issues I might consider the carbs. My sister-in-law is starting college I want to lend her the car for a couple of years and need her to have reliable transportation Is the system worth fixing / rebuilding or am I better off changing to carburation?
