The best way to field check for spark is with a 5th spark plug. It can be an
old one. Just unplug one of the normal plugs and connect it to the plug in your
hand, then place this plug so its body is on the engine somewhere, away from
any wires, and watch the gap while someone cranks the starter.

An even better way is to use an inductive timing light. It won't flash unless
there is actually current flowing out the plug wire, which generally means that
there is spark.

If you think you might be flooded, just hold the accel pedal down while you
crank, better yet, unplug the fuel pump relay under the dash while you crank.
