I've never actually lost any tools - not permanently anyway - but I think we must have a kind of interdimensional vortex that instantly swallows any screw, nut or washer that you drop. I do have one of those telescopic magnets, but if the screw has gone onto an alternative universe then the magnet can't reach it. My small wire cutter sometimes makes a temporary transition into the other dimension, and then suddenly reappears in front of my eyes after I've been looking for it for about 20 minutes.
