I've caught a cold so I'm not checking my e-mails like usual. I'm also sending this to the whole list rather than just Jason. The '71 trans is toast. I had it stored outside under a roof overhang, and under plastic, and it still managed to get water IN it! Doh!! I turned it over to look it over and water came out a vent hole in the top :-( The drive flanges took some effort to get turning and I couldn't shift it into ANY gear :-( :-(..... The other trans it a LOT better, it shifted, and I could turn the drive flanges using the input shaft, with little if any slop, (I couldn't feel any and don't remember any when it was in my then girlfriend, now wife's Super Beetle). This trans is from a '73 Super Beetle and has the later case with only the right removable side cover, (the left is at this point is a molded part of the case). The funny thing is that BOTH of these transmissions have AH, and a series of #'s stamped into the case below, and slightly to the side of the part number on a 1"x3" flat spot of the case. This SHOULD be a 3.88 final drive, ('73 single side cover, "Freeway Flyer") trans. But according to my J.T Garwood book, (this 2 book set covers any and all changes to the Beetle over the years), early '72 T1's were "DE", then changed to the new "AH" (still dual side cover), then to the newer '73 single side cover "AT" trans. So I'm confused, but as near as I can figure this is an old 4.18 ratio Ring and Pinion trans built in a new single side cover case, (am I wrong or is J.T. Garwood??). Why I don't know, (maybe because it was a Super Beetle???). Russ, Jim, anyone, jump in here if you can shed any light on this. Keep in mind that the 3.88 R&P trans will allow your engine, and cooling fan to run slower, (lower RPM at a given speed), This may cause overheating problems, but I'm not sure. The T1's ran fine like this, the T3's are likely to be fine as well. I think this was covered on the list a while back. There are three other things that need addressing if you go with my trans. You will need to do a nose cone swap, the T1, and T3 have very different mounts here. You will have to deal with the clutch operating arm/lever. The '73 T1 trans has a longer arm creating more leverage on the cross shaft, (more leverage here means less at the clutch pedal). I remember it being VERY close to the T1 body work, so it might not clear the T3 metal. And lastly the throw-out bearing rides on a sleeve on this trans. The change was in '71 on the T1's, not sure on the T3's, (but the '71 T3 trans has the bearing/sleeve combo). The throw-out bearing, sleeve and the clutch pressure plate were redsigned at this time, and need to match, or failure will result. You should be able to remove/replace the sleeve/bearing combo to match the pressure plate on your engine. I'm still willing to help in any way I can, (like buying the pistons/cylinders to give Jason extra $$), but is there ANYONE out there closer to Wyoming that would be willing to help Jason out? Shipping from New York to Wyoming is going to really cost Jason alot on something as heavy as this. Please help guys/gals if you can! As for the pistons the measurement that I need to know is the height/location of the wrist pin relative to the face of the piston. Measure down the skirt from the piston crown to the top of the wrist pin hole, stock is 1 1/8", stroker should be ~7/8".
