There's enough evidence to suggest batch production for one particular importer was the norm - I had 3 Squares at one time, made on successive days. With special requirements for the various markets and without the present computer controlled parts conveyors it would be the only sensible way to build them.

How big would these batches be? The reason I ask is a little thing that surprized me when I acquired Simon Glen's very nice book "VWs of the world". IN the first chapter he tells the readers about the VWs he has owned, one of them being a 1968 VW type 1. The VIN on Simon's 1500, whcih was built in Germany to Australian specifications was 118 332 210, while the 1968 1300 I have outside my house has VIN 118 333 066. My car is of course built to Norwegian specs, and was sold new from the same VW dealer that still is present here in my town. With a difference of only 856 units, these cars must have ben only a few hours apart. One LHD ended in Norway, the other an RHD on the other side of the world.

Another point here is type 3 content. The car which Hal dismantled in California had a VIN only some 2000 units below my car. Hal's car was a California car, while mine is a Norwegian spec car, sold at the same VW dealer I mentioned earlier (and which I still get some parts from). Now I hope to get the heater channels replaced soon, so that the fresh California metal can start a new life on my car.
