I just went down and measured a stock piston here and the height difference 
between the high and low part of the skirt was 1.8mm. I think this is the 
measurement you're talking about. I don't know why that might be shortened 
unless it was for a stroker crank.

So it seems to just shift by itself from R to 1st? I would check the nose cone 
mounting bushing and make sure that it's not coming apart, and check the shift 
coupling also. Sometimes these problems are external. Wouldn't THAT be nice!
