Hi all, I have just bought a 1965 1500N base model squareback. It needs a lot of small things doing to it, the brake lights and indicators don't work, the gearshift needs a new bushing, there seems to be something wrong with the generator, the carb needs some adjustments and the engine a general tune up. The car is pretty original, and I have all the receipts dating back to September 1965 when it was first registered here. It is still running on 6V although the wiring looks like it might have been fiddled with a bit. I do have a receipt from 1967 where the tail lights were too dim, so they even had problems back then! ;-) The drive home was relatively uneventful, except for the sparks and smoke that came out of the back at one stage! I was being followed by a friend from the VW club, so he flashed his lights at me to pull over. Luckily we found the sparks were coming from a hole in the damper pipe, it was burning off the fibreglass. The smoke was from the generator gasket, it had got sucked into the back of the pulley and was rubbing. There was also some duct tape over the top vent on the generator which couldn't have been helping things much. The brakes are a bit funny on it, they want to lock up under only moderate pressure, when I press on them very lightly they work all right. Anyway, it is late now and I am working early in the morning so it is off to bed.
