<x-flowed>You could wire it to the seat belt connector on the ign switch (72-73 at least). This way you will only have to insert the key (not turn it) to play music. This goes for the trigger wire of course, you should always have power from a more direct power source, not through the ign switch.

I think your step further IS how they are supposed to be wired. The stock radio in all my cars (71, 72, 69) has been able to turn on without the ignition. I am always worried that I will leave it on accidentally.
