Like Jim said -- can't you just unscrew the Beetle handle's lever and replace it with the longer, deeper-reaching Type III lever? I believe it's an obvious, exposes phillips screw. I haven't had one off in a while, though, but I recall "converting" a Beetle handle for use on my '71 Squareback, if I'm not mistaken...
