Maybe I should have written "bumpers that deform and absorb the energy before
the bodywork is damaged in a 5 mph frontal collision" as I believe that was the
US requirement proposed in the late sixties.  No deformation of the passenger
space at 10mph was another requirement which resulted in the reinforcing panels
being fitted on the inner wheel well.  They cause much rust and weakening now
though!
