Okay, you got me wondering about my memory, sanity, etc. so I went downstairs 
to look at the only type 1 dist I have. It turns out that it is actually a 211Q 
dist, from a 71 bus, which had a type 1 engine. I have been assuming all along 
that the buses with type 1 engines would have the same geometry as the bugs, 
but that may not be a fair assumption.  

What do you say, Russ?  

On this 211Q dist, when I compare it to any 68-73 type 3 FI dist, I find that 
the position of the #1 SP is the same, but the oil hole is rotated somewhat 
less than 90 deg. The 211Q has vac advance and retard, so it's can is bigger. 
It's possible that it was made to mount in a slightly different position 
because of this, but this seems like a lot of difference.  

Unfortunately that's the only type 1 dist I have.  

Thanks for bringing this up. If most type 1 dists are the same as type 3s in 
this respect, that makes them pretty useful to us.
