I was considering a solution like that and if it hadn't been so far gone would probably have done it. Its got to be worth considering if you've got a late model with this area still intact- even if you keep your drain tubes clear- this area is really prone to rust and it is impossible to get in there to fix it- it WILL get out of hand eventually and the only way to prevent it is to get in there and paint/por the start of the rust to stop it progressing.
