Don't try to just guess at what a good timing setting is. This is the road to
ruin as you will start guessing at everything and end up with everything out of
whack. Buy or borrow a timing light and do it right. You can even do it
statically, but the timing light is a wonderful tool that will tell you lots
about various things on your engine.

So now you know that your guess at the timing is probably way off. Try setting
it to TDC. If it is still way off, it is possible that something is assembled
wrong, but you won't know that until you get a timing light.

OTOH, the vacuum hose should not be against the generator. The type 3 vacuum
can should point up to keep it clear. Do you have the wrong advance can in
there?

All FI engines from 68 to 73 have both vacuum advance and mech advance. 72 got
vacuum retard IN ADDITION. The Bentley shows this correctly.

The FI trigger points in the base of the dist trigger the injectors. When you
turned the dist one of them opened (or closed, I forget which it is) and
tripped 2 of the injectors. This is a sign that lots of things are working
properly.
