I'm not really sure about the details, I just know that in general you want the rim width to be about the same as the tread width so that the sidewalls can curve in and out. If you follow your rule of thumb then the sidewalls can only curve out (or in, depending on your perspective) and this is not the shape they were designed to have in use. The tire shape would either be like \_/ or like (_) . The latter is the desirable one. If you have 6" rims, I'd look for some 185/70-15 tires.
