Interesting. My car has one of the cheapie Brazilian pumps and I'm virtually
certain that it doesn't develop enough pressure. I also suspect that it
leaks fuel into the engine, although I was unable to prove this.

Anyway, on the weekend I will hopefully have the time to install my NOS
Italian-made but genuine Type 3 fuel pump
(http://www.type34.info/temp/IM000189.JPG). I will also be installing an
electronic-ignition gizmo in the distributor. That, plus all new vacuum
hoses which I recently installed should hopefully make a big difference in
the way the engine starts and runs, assuming that my hunches are correct.

Once all this stuff is installed, I will be starting the engine this weekend
for the first time in about 2 months.

I also have a Pierburg pump on the way, so it will be interesting to compare
the two once it arrives.

One other possibly silly question: I also replaced the oil filler rubber
boot, which was badly torn. Is there any way that the lack of sealing there
could somehow have impacted on engine performance?
