On the f.i. car, when you floor it the pedal goes down and stops, but then you can push it harder (pushing against this extra spring that's part of the accel. levers at the throttle body)... it doesn't open the throttle valve any more, I don't think, but it causes the electrical kick-down switch to engage, and will downshift you to a lower gear (unless you'd be over redline after the downshift). You can achieve the same thing by downshifting by hand, though...
