-I don't think your accident would have damaged the front axle UNLESS one of the 
-front wheels struck a curb, or something else, in the process of spinning

It's been 4 years since that incident, I don't really recall if I hit anything on the spin or 
not, I suppose it's possible but the tires were fine and I drove away from it (though 
the car did feel "off" from then on out)

-the index notch in the lower ball joint shaft pointing straight ahead. -
-Go out and look at yours. Only the uppers are allowed to be adjusted away from 
-straight ahead.

ARGH! I just went out and rechecked this (in 'reply' mode, as I had checked it after 
reading the digest) and you may have sussed the folly of my ways...

These ball joints don't have the notch that was shown in my Bentley, they have a 
straight shaft that is flatted (for lack of a better word) on each side, sort of like this:

On my driver side, the upper ball joint is mildly rotated from directly ahead (where 
the flat sides of the shaft are in parallel with 'straight' on the vehicle). My lower right 
balljoint is way out of that alignment...  while the remaining 2 are spot on.

Does this sound as if I've mixed my types? How can I identify them? they are not 
branded with part numbers, though they did come in boxes with type 3 PNs.

-I usually go in WITH my car when I get it aligned. I've had good front end men 
-want to do it their way, but when that didn't work, the good ones are willing 
-to listen.

Sounds like a plan, I may learn something as well. ;~)
