Hello all - I am usually a regular bug guy but my neighbor has a '72 fastback automatic he needs some help with. The deal is it's the original engine as far as we can tell - he has service records for it, and the car only has about 70k miles anyway. He got it last year, the FI was having problems, a friend of ours put on twin carbs - I don't know exactly which - and a 009 dist. Yesterday I was helping change spark plugs and suggested we check the timing. I got my timing light and we fired it up...couldn't see any timing marks thru the little hole. When we took the cover off the gen pulley we could see in from the side and the timing marks were way advanced - at around 950 rpms idle it was like a good 30 degree BTDC. Revving the engine advanced it even more. I checked the dwell - 60 degrees which is much higher than a stock bug (48-52 degs at idle). The car was set up and timed "by ear" by said friend. I have no experience with dual carbs or a centrifugal advance dist. Should the timing really be that far BTDC? What is the correct dwell for this dist? The car is reliable but runs kind of rough. He's never checked valve clearances since buying the car, I made an appointment to go over to his place in the next week to do that. My questions - how do we set timing? What is the correct dwell? Thanks. Charlie Houston TX '66 Bug "Whitey" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
