That "friend" did far more damage by swapping the fuel injection with carbs.

Many like carbs, and that's fine, but we constantly see people tear out a
perfectly good FI system and replace it with carbs...then they have problem
after problem.  What's sad is that many FI systems that are removed are then
thrown away, wiring harness hacked, etc. :-(

It sounds like you are the better friend; I hope you can help (and educate!)
your neighbor so they will have many years of fun and trouble-free air-cooled
driving :-)

P.S. To help, get a Bentley shop manual or the Idiot's Guide, even a Haynes is
better than nothing and they will REALLY help.
