I finally got around to pulling my engine this (finally) beautiful weekend & today. Thanks to everyone who had great suggestions to help... Russ' coat hanger trick with the AT bellhousing worked so well I was able to support the tranny before I even took the engine out. I didn't know about the upper left-hand engine/tranny bolt being pressed into the engine case though. That was real fun to get out. Anyway, after I dropped the engine on the cart, I went to jack up the car on the driver's side the rest of the way up off the jack stands so I could wheel the engine out underneath the back of the car. While I had been replacing the fuel hoses in the front of the car earlier on, I noticed that the shock absorber on the front passenger side had split so that there was basically no covering on the piston. The upper cover had split and had slid down and was resting on the lower mount. I made a mental note for a replacement later, figuring it was probably not good for the piston to be exposed like that. So I don't know if this is related to that. I was jacking up the car and heard a loud "pop" like a tire being blown out or something. At first I thought maybe the jack had failed and had blown or something, so I let it down, then looked it over well. No oil anywhere or anything... And it still worked fine. All the tires were still full of air... I have no idea where the noise came from. Apart from the jack where I was raising the car, and the jack stand on the other side, all the weight of the front of the car was on that passenger front wheel. Is it possible something blew in the shock absorber? Anyone know what that would've sounded like? I didn't notice any oil leaking or anything... Very strange... Also, on the top of the oil cooler under the engine tin was about 1/2 inch of crud that actually looked like it might've been some kind of padding at one point. Did these come with some sort of insulator for use between the cooler & tin? If so, should it be replaced eventually? I suppose it could've been crud. I found enough between the cylinder fins & elsewhere that it was possible very little air was circulating under the cooling tin. Thanks again for the help folks... This list is beyond excellent...
