I had this problem when I first tried to get my distributor out. At the time, Jim told me this is a common problem that first-time Type 3 owners have... What he suggested, and what worked with me, was exactly what was suggested this time -- loosen the clamp and turn the distributor enough so you can clear the cooling flaps bar. If you loosen up everything, you can turn it enough so that the long bolt just gets past...
