No, the pulley timing notches will always be right, unless there was something seriously broken during installation. The single notch stamped on the top of the distributor can be wrong if the dist drive gear is installed wrong. > > Yes, because if the dizzy is installed like a bug, > > it will never match a type3 location. > I'm always confused by this... What does this mean, > "installed like a bug?" When you put the engine together you have to install the dist drive gear. It has about 7 teeth on the bottom so there are about 7 ways to install it. One way is right for beetles (and type 1 buses.) Type 3 engines need this gear to be installed in a different orientation. The details are in your Bentley manual, engine chapter. > I think my distributor might be installed incorrectly > by the PO for the following reason (I could be wrong): Once the dist drive gear is installed there is only one way for the dist to fit in. > The notch on my distributor for #1TDC is at about > 10o'clock. It sounds like your dist drive gear is in there ~180 deg off. It will work just fine like this, but it might be less confusing to get it right. Turning the drive gear around is a bit of a job, however, and not for the faint of heart, as there are parts that can be dropped into the engine that will take a complete engine teardown to get out. > Based on the valve adjustment I did earlier, I have no > other reason to suspect that the notch at 10o'clock is > in the wrong position, but I haven't seen any other > Type3's where the ignition wires overlap like this... It is easy to check. Just turn the engine to #1 TDC and then pull out the dist and compart what you see to what is in the Bentley. NEVER TURN THE ENGINE CW WHEN THE DIST IS OUT. IT CAN PUSH THE DRIVE GEAR UPWARD AND JAM IT AT AN ANGLE THAT MAKES IT ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO REMOVE. -- Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
