What do you > pros out there use? > Hi Martin, I used acetone quite successfully, but its pretty noxious stuff. It gets all the dirt off but tends to drive it well into your skin if your not careful, and rubber gloves don't last 5 minutes. But it works and is cheap- you could buy nailvarnish remover or you can get 5L cans over here pretty cheap as a degreaser from car spray shops or RS. It will only remove the grunge and varnish though- any corrosion will have to be wire-brushed or I've heard of people using caustic soda but that is really dangerous if you are not really careful (both to you and the alloy bodies!) Don't know why soaking would be bad, unless you left the float and rubber diaphragms in- i don't suppose the plastic would like such agressive solvents. I think everything else is metal so should be safe. An old tooth brush is excellent for getting into the nooks and crannies. Do it in well ventilated space (outside would be best) and beware of fire!
