For years I've heard that Peugeot trademarked "all 3 digit numbers with a zero in the middle." So they owned 303, 404, 505, etc. In the 60s when Porsche was coming out with the replacement for the 356 it was planned to be the 901, but someone noticed at the last minute that this stepped on the Peugeot trademark. So Porche introduced their new car as the 911. If you look at their parts lists, however, you will find that the old 901 designation lives on in many of the parts for that car. At least that's the story as I've heard it. -- Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
