The bigger pads really don't make for stronger brakes. They only make for longer pad lifetime. The strength of the brakes is due to the diameter of the pistons in the calipers, which are 42mm for all type 3 calipers. (BTW, there is always the possibility that your lone early caliper is actually an incorrect type 1 caliper with 40mm piston, which would be undesirable in a type 3.) While the longer pad lifetime may seem like an advantage, you should get 40k miles out of a set of the early pads anyway, so this really isn't a very big deal. Just for the sake of future servicability, I urge you to put it back to the right pads for its year (and VIN, if it's a 71). This will avoid the disappointment that comes when you order the right pads for your car, only to discover that YOUR car needs something different. This is the kind of trick we tend to do, thinking it is harmless and that WE'LL remember, but it's really annoying when we discover something like this done to us by a PO. -- Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
