I believe that you want to fill the tranny fluid up to the point right before it starts to leak out-so you don't have to fill and then get the cap on real quick...actually I think due its location/fluid properties you are supposed to fill it very slowly, and let is sit for a little bit to allow it to settle/flow all the way in, then fill a little more...etc, until it is just below the filling hole. Above the filling hole you could build up too much pressure inside, and potentially cause seals to blow or leak....(according to muir) -kevin guarnotta '65 kombi '71 sqbk somerville, ma -----Original Message----- From: Daniel Baum [mailto:daniel@type34.info] Sent: Wednesday, July 30, 2003 12:54 PM To: type3@vwtype3.org Subject: [T3] A couple of followups Hi all, A couple of follow-ups to old threads: If you remember, I found red oil in my diff., and assumed there was a leak there. I filled it up with GL-5 a couple of weeks ago. Today I opened up the fill plug again. I couldn't see any sign of the oil being pink. What did happen was that the oil started to drip out of the fill plug when I opened it up. I squirted some more in and closed it up again but there was a puddle of oil on the floor when I finished. I hope that's OK 'cause I have no intention of opening it up again, unless there is some really good reason. I think if there is a leak it must be pretty slow. Something to watch in the long term. Also, I finally found what the reason for the short in my ignition switch is. I was actually in the middle of changing the switch, when I realised that there is something metallic on the inside of the steering column that juts down and touches the 50 connector of my non- original ignition switch. I taped the connector and that has fixed the problem as far as I can see. I'll get some fatter shrink tubing and do it properly. In the long term I want to replace my non-authentic parts with the proper ones and rewire parts of the car to conform to the Type 34 wiring diagram (most of it already does). Does anyone have a '69 fuse box in _really_ good condition? I think I have the rest of the proper parts, but I'll have to check the diagram proerply again.
