There's probably a couple of things going on here. One is that at high speed 
(how high?) the generator brushes may bounce around if the commutator is rough 
or out of round. This requires a specialty shop to gently "turn" the 
commutator.

In general, a dimly glowing light is also an indicator of a poor connection 
somewhere between the voltage regulator and the dash. You should check all your 
connections to make sure they are pushed on all the way and that they are 
tight.
