Yes, I think it's probably to do with that.
The Variant is a more useful car so it got used more!  Notches appealed more to
people who drive in hats, with low annual mileages and garages.  ;-)
You wouldn't take your Notch down to the builder's yard to collect sand, bricks
or lumber - that's what the Variant is for!
