What is the reason for this? The squares certainly did outsell the 
notches, but could it be because the square was in many cases bought as 
an alternative to the Transporter, and as such, led a harder life with 
more neglect owners?

I know of only two other type 3's in my district, one is a 68 Notch, 
somewhat cal look style, the other is a 72 Fastback, stock. It's been a 
few years since I last saw a Variant on the road here.
