The stock Type 3 single carb really isn't enough for a 1600, and any non-VW single carb I've heard about is guaranteed to overfuel. This isn't just an economy issue, it also shortens the life of the motor. You're doing the right thing by rethinking your fuel system, I'd just advise you to be prepared to go a lot further than bolting on another carburetor.
