These are related parts, but two different problems. For your car to run correctly and strongly, it would be best to fix the distributor, too. I don't think you can get the full pep out of a Type III (or any air-cooled Volkswagen) unless the distributor is an appropriate model for the car, in good shape, and adjusted correctly.
