I had one minor mishap when I tried turning the ignition key for the first time (with the starter disconnected), the dash warning lights went out, and the ignition switch started crackling and smoking. I assumed it wasn't supposed to do this. Anyway, I went over the wires again, improved some connections with solder, shrink tubing and (occasionally) insulating tape. When I put it all back together again, it all worked. I still don't really know what the problem was. I presume it was a short somewhere on the starter wire, because this is the only one that only comes into play when you turn the key to the second notch. There were another couple of bad connections which I fixed. It now has that "by the book" feeling that you get when you know (or perhaps hope) that everything is working right and you won't have to touch it again. Another side effect is that for some reason the fuel gauge shows a higher level than it did before. Go figure.
