Re: [T3] Ask and ye shall cut up an unwrecked perfect car
<x-flowed>> rust free, straight, just needed a motor and pans.
Eh? Rust free, but needed pans? I think I saw a lot of VWs
for sale in Michigan that met that description. ;)
I'll bet that if you could transport a non-running car across
the U.S. for free, then very few people anywhere would do major rust
repair on any but the rarest models. Basically, if I were shopping
for a relatively common model VW here in the west, like a Beetle,
Bus, or Squareback, why on *earth* would I ever touch anything with
rust? I could save huge amounts of time and money by shopping for
something that's never been rusted, and end up with an original car.
If I lived someplace rusty (which I did for eight years), I
probably couldn't afford to spend the time and money to fly out to a
non-rusty place and try my luck spending weeks looking for an
unrusted car, and have it shipped back.
No disrespect to those who are doing major rust repairs --
more power to them, and I'm all for it.
Put it all another way -- in any location, I think we only
cut up and destroy the worst X percent of the cars. In some places
(like the western U.S.), even the worst X percent of the cars are in
far better shape than the worst X percent of cars in a rusty place;
that's where it gets confusing. The cost of shipping all of those
"good" worst cars from the west to other places is just too great, so
they fall under the knife.
