It's always hard to do repairs by remote control, but here's what I'd suggest. As good as your mechanic might be, he is probably not familiar with lots of things on this car. I'd steer him toward things that are pretty generic like the brakes. I'd have him inspect the long center brake line and replace it if it's leaking. If he's willing to rebuild parts, he could rebuild the MC, calipers and rear wheel cylinders. Or he could send them to me for rebuilding. I don't recommend that they be replaced with new ones because the new ones that are available are not as good as the originals. The 72 ignition timing is difficult and the only manual that gets it right is the Bentley. He should try that, as well as lubing the front end, changing the oil, adjust the valves, and setting the dwell. I would strongly hesitate about asking him to do ANYTHING with the FI. You're much better off working with us on that, if it needs help, after you get back. -- Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
