I guess it just depends on how handy you are with a welder and sheetmetal work. Of course, it also depends on how much time and effort you want to put into it. We live in the Rust Belt, and I've watched my husband do some AMAZING things to "old rust bucket" type cars. Some, I was sure were terminal. But by the time he's done with them, you'd never know it was the same car. Costs him more in time and effort than actual dollars, but he does it because he enjoys it. He learned by doing it himself, and if you ask him, he'll say he is still practicing. I have driven quite a few of his "rustorations", not all VW, but still very nice daily drivers. Don't know if you've seen the pictures of his "Roadster" posted on the SAMBA, but that car started out as a heap of parts trying to rust in the back yard. Even his Notchback, nicknamed "Krusty"- yup, it looked pretty rough, looks 100% better than when it left to rot. Ok, here are a couple of shots of the Roadster, the first was when he started it, and there wasn't much there either. http://thesamba.com/vw/gallery/index.mv?photo+94770.jpg The next one is from this year (about June) before he painted it, put the engine in or anything like that. Much fabricating later...... http://thesamba.com/vw/gallery/index.mv?photo+94772.jpg Here are some more updates. These are of it in color and with the 8 spokes. Hope you like them.(He drove it for the local car parade/cruise night on July 11th.) http://thesamba.com/vw/gallery/index.mv?photo+94954.jpg http://thesamba.com/vw/gallery/index.mv?photo+94956.jpg http://thesamba.com/vw/gallery/index.mv?photo+94960.jpg http://thesamba.com/vw/gallery/index.mv?photo+94966.jpg "Invest in precious metal, buy a Type 3."
