I use the front (towards the front of the car) passenger side as #1, the rear passenger side as #2, #3 & 4 are on the drivers side, without the book in front of me I can't remember which is front and back, but I followed the diagram on the book. To get the #1 cylinder on TDC at the beginning of the procedure, I followed the #1 spark plug wire to the distributor, there's also a notch in rim of the disty that I lined the rotor up with. >Also, I wouldn't drive a car that had a valve that wouldn't close; probably wouldn't even run the engine!
