The car has spent much of its recent history running very rich, so I mostly know what to look for, I think. The only thing I can think of is that maybe one or both of the accelerator pumps is badly adjusted. However wouldn't that lead to a cloud of black smoke when I press the pedal? One other thing that is remotely possible, I suppose, is that one or both of the chokes is stuck. They worked fine the last time I had the air cleaner off, but obviously with the aircleaner on you can't see what's going on. Again, I would expect that to result in clouds of black smoke, and possibly even the engine bogging down and dying (BTDT).
