A friend of mine came over today, and, after resetting the timing after yesterday's misguided attempt at fiddling with it, we took the car round the block again. The last time this friend of mine went for a ride in the car it still had the old, bodged carb linkage, the carbs were not balanced properly, they were running too rich and I still had the old front shocks. This time, he was stunned at the difference. The car accelerated really nicely (I don't know why I thought it was gutless before. I think I just wasn't giving it enough gas), and changed gears up and down in all the right places. It actually went into third; I think this is the first time it's been driven fast enough to do that. It still banged once or twice as I pressed the accelerator HARD to get up a hill. Could my substandard exhaust be responsible for this? He is pretty knowledgeable about VWs and cars in general, and he didn't think it was a big deal. And then I let him drive it. It's the first time I've let anyone else drive the car since I've had it. He drove it round the block (harder than I did) for a few minutes and was grinning from ear to ear when we got home. Incidentally, I didn't have to give him any special instructions to drive the car (of the kind: "don't do this or it won't start/it'll explode", or whatever.) I just gave him the key and he drove away. I think the wreck's become a car at last!
