My "favorite" place to start is always the ignition system.
You can set the point gap and timing correctly and with certainty,
and the car will only run better for doing this. Also, if you have
other competing problems, getting the ignition squared away will help
you move on to discovering the others.
I still like Muir's book for total first-timers. I know that
it has a number of drawbacks, and the Bentley is most often the last
word. Still, when starting from scratch, Muir will help you get the
points/timing/valves adjusted.
Hmmm there are some listees in Seattle, too, eh? Maybe
somebody can help you out...
