I think there are just 2 methods of measuring octane: Research Octane Number 
(RON) and Motor Octane Number (MON.) In the US, the number you find on the pump 
is the average of these two. You'll see this on most gas pumps where it says 

RON + MON/2

The spec that VW used was just one of these, but I can never remember which one 
it was. Whichever it was, it was the higher of the 2, so our numbers always 
look low, by about 2-3 points, to Europeans.
