I don't know why this happens sometimes. Most people will never experience it while others will get it continually. My THEORY is that it is related to a broken overflow hose and water that gets into the gas thru those cracks. In 35 years I have only taken 1 pump motor apart and that was for a completely unrelated problem. You might want to replace the fuel filter there and break the old one open just to see if there's any sign of stuff in there that might cause this.
