Re: [T3] shift rod bushing

You mean the one in front? According to your signature, you have a '71.
Lucky you - you can inspect this bushing with very little effort :-).

Remove the shifter, and move aside the carpet on the tunnel. See how the
shifter was bolted to an adapter plate? Unbolt the adapter plate. Welded
to it is the hanger for the shift rod. If you maneuver it around, you
should be able to see the bushing quite well.

To replace it you do. First, take out the shifter. Then, you need to
remove the shift rod through the front of the car. There is an access plate
on the bottom of the floor pan in the middle of the "triangle" formed by the
torsion bar housing and the forks that go forward to mount the rear subframe
to the pan. It is held in by three sheet metal screws. If it hasn't been
removed in decades, it may be slightly "stuck" on there, but if the three
screws are out, then you should be able to apply some force and pop it off.
Then, you'll see the coupler. Disconnect it. Then, remove the access plate
in the front of the car on the tunnel (two 6mm bolts with 10mm heads), the
spare tire well (one 6mm nut with a 10mm head), and the access plate in the
body under the front bumper (one 4-5mm nut with a 8mm head, accessed from
the spare tire well). Then, push it forward and out. Replace the bushing.
Voila!

Take care,
