You've been driving in the rain, haven't you? The shoes are rusting to the drums. And it can happen after just sitting overnight.

The very same thing happens every day, in the Peugeots at work. The rear brakes stick when they've been parked overnight with the parking brake applied, but they loosen up as soon as the clutch is let out.

I also experienced the same thing in a Vanagon syncro (rear engine VW content). This was the 4wd version, and had been parked for one month, with the handbrake applied. The left rear was frozen hard! I started the engine, got in, put the tranny in low gear (off road ratio), locked the rear differential (center was an auto-locker) and drove the van forward with left rear scrubbing! It shold be possible with the rear diff locked, but still it did! I had to jack it up, take off the rear wheel, and hammer the drum with a BFH to loosen up the rear brakes.

Type 3 content: I've never experienced this i my 73, but my point here is that it can happen to every car with drum brakes, but not very often if the car has rear disc brakes.
