I think it's what you get when you mix "Type III ignorance" with "VW trip odometer". See, I believe that the Type I trip speedo is fairly rare. Meanwhile, it came standard in many Type IIIs starting in '70 or '71. So, if you have a buyer and a seller who know Beetles but not Type IIIs, they'll get all jazzed when they see "ooh a trip speedo LQQK R@RE!".
