I haven't really spent that much time looking at the balls themselves- they may well be fine. I wondered about somehow tightening up the spring clip in the ball housing- or maybe your idea- maybe a small nylon washer atop the ball to force the ball tighter against the clip? Worth investigating IMHO. Actually I think the worst play in my linkage comes from the 3 armed lever in the middle. I am planning on replacing the bushings inside it as I'm sure that its floppiness can lead to hit and miss carb balance.
