<x-flowed>the porsche 914 was not the sport model for the type 4 line. it was a totally separate car that only happened to share the engine. even the chassis/drivetrain setup (apart from the body) is totally different.

The Type 3s were introduced in '61 as VW's high line, meaning it offered
greater luxury and performance at a higher price. The Type 34 is the sport
model in the Type 3 line, designed to lead sales of the entire line. It was
also the most expensive, with lots of hand work done by Karmann.


As a parallel, when the Type 4 line was introduced to one-up the Type 3s and
freshen VW's image, it also included a sport model, known in the States as
the Porsche 914.
