It's true that Chevy got their cars out first. I may be wrong here, but it's
been my understanding that the clays for the Type 34 were up and in process
at the Ghia studios when GM came to call seeking ideas for its
Volkswagen-killer. The similarity is even more striking in the early Monza
Spyder, GM's concept car.

The GM choices of a large, overweight engine and larger interior disbalanced
the design considerably, and consequently the already pretty weak American
suspension engineering was pressed to keep up. Yes, all Type 3's have a
*much* better suspension than most contemporary American cars.
