The site posted earlier was pretty detailed on all of
what is available.    As for actual use of the rubbing
compound, what i have used seems a lot like clay.  Use
it wet, just a little moisture to help move you along.
 

Do not worry to much about all those warnings though
of the compound being to abrasive, done by hand you
really will not do any real harm.  Wash car first, use
clean tee shirt- all the common sense stuff.  

Use a white tee shirt and as you mentioned with that
other product and you can watch for your car color on
your rag. Some is fine, just something to see what you
are doing.  If you need a good 'cleaning' then you
will be removing material.  I last used this on my
parts getter (truck) and saw mostly black from my red
S-10? ~ all dirt and crud, even though I had washed
it. 

Re: waxing afterwards, I used one of those cheapy
like-wax products once (might have been a polish). 
Then following week went for a car-wash,  washed most
the shine off (self-wash water was hot, but come on?)
